Sustainable Irrigated Agriculture -Participatory Irrigation Management initiatives-

This video features Japan's farmer-led water management system as part of the history and one of the institutions which are the basis of JICA's international cooperation. This system was historically established for the foundation for Japan's sustainable irrigated agriculture. In this video, its history and water associations, called "Land Improvement Districts (LIDs)", are introduced along with opinions regarding JICA's Initiatives from government staff in developing countries. Japan's LIDs are known as a model for "Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM)" which is expanding worldwide.
In Japan, agriculture has developed around wet rice farming since ancient times. A network of irrigation facilities and farmer-led water management systems has enabled sustainable irrigated agriculture. In particular, Japan is characterized by the organizations, institutions, and operation of Land Improvement Districts (LIDs), which mainly run this system based on relevant legislation and policies.
This video features this system, known as a model for "Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM)", with real activities of LIDs and farmers. It also features JICA's Initiatives such as technical cooperation projects and the Knowledge Co-Creation Program with opinions from government staff and trainees in developing countries who actually experienced those initiatives.
The main purpose of this video is to provide a deeper understanding on the basis of PIM for government staff and farmers who work in JICA projects or trainees who participate in training courses in Japan.

Gender and Diversity in Disaster Risk Reduction

In emergencies such as natural disasters and the spread of infectious diseases, as well as in the subsequent recovery and reconstruction processes, it is essential to respond from the perspective of gender and diversity. Based on the experiences and lessons learnt from Japan's response to disasters and COVID-19, this material will introduce various measures and initiatives that reflect the views of diverse population and for "Build Back Better" recovery to leave no one behind.
Based on the KCCP "Gender and Diversity in Disaster Risk Reduction" which has been conducted since 2016, added components of gender-based violence and COVID-19 response to summarize the importance of DRR from the perspective of gender and diversity, Japan's efforts, as well as global trends.

The materials will be posted on the JICA-Net Library, JICA-Net YouTube, to utilise for trainings, seminars and lectures for domestic and international audiences.

Japan's central and local governments develop and implement a variety of policies and projects aimed at resolving diverse social issues. While the elements of planning, human resources, and technology are essential to these, in this video, we will discuss one more key theme: public finance. To effectively utilize fiscal resources in implementing policies and projects, one element of appropriate public financial management, first, prioritization and planning based on project environment; second, fiscal discipline and alternative finance; third, building a coalition for resource mobilization; and fourth, sustaining actions and responding to barriers will be of particular importance. This video introduces the examples of large-scale infrastructure projects, advanced projects conducted with open innovation, and local development through Public Private Partnerships based on these four perspectives through three types of operations.
