Introduction to JICA Partnership Program (JPP)



JICA has been implementing the JCA Partnership Program (JPP) since 2002 in collaboration with Japanese development partners, mainly NGO's Local Governments, Universities. In order to promote the JPP through appropriate understanding of the program and cinditons, the film has been produced. The scenes from the selected JPP projects in Combodia, India and Kenya are being futured in the film.

This material looks at JICA's work related to Chagas disease, which is rife in Central and South America. It examines projects undertaken in Honduras and El Salvador. Japanese experts and the JOCV worked with their local counterparts. Many groups-medical professionals, health volunteers, local communities and schools-were involved.
How did these various groups come together? And how did they execute successful, sustainable projects?
This material looks at these questions.



技術協力コンテンツ「日本の農民参加型灌漑管理組織」  Contents of Technical Cooperation "PARTICIPATORY IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATIONS IN JAPAN"



This Content aims to contribute to transfer of participatory irrigation management (PIM) technologies to developing countries by introducing the structure and functions of the Land Improvement District (LID), a PIM organization in Japan. Since it is impossible to cultivate paddy-rice in rain-fed paddies in Japan because of the meteorological and hydrological constraints, irrigation is essential for wet-rice cultivation. Consequently, irrigation has been practiced since wet-rice cultivation was established in the late Jomon Period. Irrigation facilities presumably used by more than one farmer have been unearthed at many archeological sites. This fact suggests the existence of organizations to manage the operation and maintenance of these irrigation facilities in ancient times. In other words, the Content explains PIM systems in Japan which has been developed and improved throughout its long history using the internationally praised system of “Land Improvement Districts,” the most important water users’ organizations in Japan today, including a traditional hierarchy of local farmers’ irrigation management organizations which support the LID system.

This multimedia-based learning material "Efforts to Improve Rural Sanitation ~Sustainable Project Formulation~" gives the basic knowledge on the trend of assistance and shows the notes at the time of the project formulation, for those who participate in the rural sanitation and hygiene sector, and eventually guide you through your future works. This material basically targets the people working on the rural sanitation and hygiene fields in the developing countries, but also hopes to be of help for the aid parties in the similar projects as the self-study and the technical training tools.



Extension of Organic Agriculture Techniques for Assistance to Small Scale Farmers' Groups


本コンテンツでは、伝統的農業の再評価、内部資源循環、生産者と消費者の関係構築、「考える農民」の育成などに焦点をあて、小規模農民と共有できる教訓が取りまとめられています。 小規模農民が圧倒的な多数を占める途上国において、地域資源を有効利用する有機農業のニーズは高く、多くの地域で普及・試行が実践されています。しかしながら、資機材などの投入が限られた小規模農民を対象とした有機農業技術の開発は十分とは言えず、また脆弱な農業普及制度・体制の下、有機農業に取り組む小規模農民の自立的な発展を促す支援が求められています。本コンテンツが途上国の支援に携わる方々に活用され、小規模貧困農民支援の一助になれば幸いです。

In the developing countries, where small scale farmers occupy an overwhelming majority, the needs of organic farming are high and its trials are practiced in various regions, because of its effective practical use to local resources. However, it may be said that development of the organic farming technology is poor for the small scale farmers, who do not have enough mechanics or materials. So it is demanded to support their sustainable development in the viewpoint of organic farming system. This Contents focus on the relations construction of a relationship between producers and consumers, upbringing of "thinking farmers", and the lesson can be shared with small scale farmers are compiled.

JICAでは、本邦研修における具体的なアクションプラン作成と、プランをもとにした帰国後の活動実施を促進しています。本ビデオは、問題分析と事業計画策定・評価手法の一つであるPCM (Project Cycle Management)手法の概要をJICA研修員に紹介するものです。本邦研修前の予習及び、研修後の復習に役立てて下さい。

JICA encourages many of the training participants to make a practical action plan and take concrete actions based on the plan after returning their home countries. This video introduces an outline of the PCM (Project Cycle Management) method, which is one of the tools to analyze problems, implement and evaluate projects, to the training participants. It is expected to be used for preparation before the training in Japan as well as review after the training.

And it consists of two contents, one is public information, the other is training materials for who are interested or start the school for all project.

This material explains JICA's initiatives in the field of education, especially basic education. It looks at three basic aspects: the why (“objective”), what (“focus”) and how (“approach”) of JICA's cooperation with partner countries.The material was created to publicize and disseminate the position paper which was prepared in 2010 to sum up JICA’s view on cooperation in education. Suggested uses for this material include symposiums, seminars, university lectures, development and international relations courses, and training sessions in Japan and abroad.

チュニジア、ヨルダンにおいてJICA が協力を行った職業訓練校で学び、卒業後身につけた技術を活かして社会で活躍する4 人の実例を紹介しています。将来は自分の洋裁店を持つことを目標に、裁縫士として工場に勤務する人、飲料水の販売会社を立ち上げた人など、それぞれのケースから、ものづくりの魅力、仕事のやりがい、キャリア形成の過程を伝え、在校生にとっての「ロールモデル」を提示します。

This material introduces examples of 4 people who graduated from vocational schools cooperated by JICA in Tunisia and Jordan, and who are now actively working with the skills they acquired there. For instance, it talks about a woman who works at a sewing factory and dreams of establishing her own tailor in the future, and also describes a man who started his own company selling drinking water. Each case presents a "role model" for the students at these vocational schools, explaining the attractiveness of craftsmanship, their passion to the careers and the process to the careers. These examples will enable students to have a clear vision of their future career, and they will also act as excellent materials in the field of career counseling.



ジェンダー主流化のためのツール  ~ジェンダーの視点に立ったPCM手法入門~
A Tool for Mainstreaming Gender : An Introduction to Gender-Responsive PCM



Teaching material "A tool for mainstreaming gender: An introduction to gender-responsive PCM" is aimed at those who have already learned PCM. It was created to offer a straightforward tool to mainstream gender, and should help JICA and other development workers to use gender-responsive PCM at the project planning and proposal phase. There are various different gender mainstreaming methods. Naturally the method introduced in this material will be adapted and improved in the field, but by using it in training and workshops its core principle of gender-responsive PCM should be understood by as many people as possible, and contribute to the effective implementation of projects.



Road Management and Maintenance Technology for Africa



This material shows the importance of road and paving planning and inspections in developing African countries through the use of visual images of actual inspections. The JICA Osaka office's "Road Management and Maintenance Technology for Africa" is a three-year practical training course. This material is expected to be used for post-training follow-ups and as shared information after participants have returned home.



JICA Tsukuba Agricultural Technology Package-Vegetable Grafting Techniques-



This material is made for use by JICA ex-training participants, JOCV and SV volunteers, and JICA experts, when they give instruction to farmers in developing countries. The structure are very easy to follow; it's possible to learn "vegetables grafting techniques" just by watching and following the contents. Some techniques, which cannot easily be taught only through manuals, can be easily understood by various people through this audio-visual materials. Moreover, this material doesn't simply give explanations of methods. It also covers such technique's essentials as : cutting down on agrochemicals, highly disease-resistant and producing valuable products; the necessity and merits are also covered. Thus it's designed so that farmers would willingly like to introduce the techniques.



SHEPアプローチ  ~動機づけ理論に基づく「市場志向型農業振興」~     SHEP Approach "Promotion of Farming as a Business" Based on Motivation Theory



This material explains JICA's SHEP Approach in the field of Agricultural and Rural Development. It looks at SHEP concept and its four essintial steps to be realize a Market-oriented Agriculture.
The material was created to publicize and disseminate the SHEP Approach which was born in Kenya in 2006. In recent years, it has already been implemented in 23 countries in Africa. Suggested uses for this material include other development agensies,universities, and training sessions in Japan and abroad.

The Lessons from Livelihood Improvement Experiences in Postwar Japan

この教材は、日本発の農村開発アプローチとして、日本の戦後の生活改善運動を概観し、日本の援助関係者が推進する援助業務の参考とすることを目的に制作しました。現在、各プロジェクトの中で生活改善のコンポーネントとして取り入れいる生活改善活動アプローチが単なる導入活動でしかない「改良かまど」が、社会的コンテクストを考慮しないまま採りいれられたり、収入向上が優先される目標であるとの理解から、生活改善と称して一挙に食品加工や手工芸を導入する向きがあります。 生活改善アプローチを正しく理解していただくために、日本の生活改善運動についての5つのキーワード(農村開発、貧困削減、生産と生活の両建ての働きかけ、参加型開発、行政と住民のシナジー)に基づき、生活改善活動へのアプローチ事例を通じて、理解を深められるよう構成しました。

This material was made for Japanese organizations that help developing countries as a reference for their assistance work. Currently, in each livelihood improvement project, there is a tendency to introduce improved kamados, as just an input activity, without considering the social context, and handicraft or food processing are introduced as a livelihood improvement project just because income improvement is the main objective. Therefore, this material is designed to deepen the understanding through example cases based on 5 key ideas: farm village development, poverty reduction, production activities compatible with the target group's lifestyle, participatory development, and synergetic effects between administrations and residents.
