Founded in 1974, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is an implementation agency for technical assistance, focusing on systems building, organization strengthening and human resource
development that will enable developing countries to pursue their own sustainable socio-economic development.
JICA's work is broad in scope and reflects international concerns and changing needs in developing countries. To traditional sectors such as agriculture and social infrastructure, JICA has
recently added assistance to combat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and SARS, support to encourage free market economies or set up legal systems, and support for the peace-building and
reconstruction efforts in countries such as Afghanistan and East Timor.
